Most Continuous Reader in the world

Deepak Sharma Bajagin, 24, Lalitpur, Nepal has got a record of “The most continuous reader in the world”.


Deepak Sharma Bajagain of Nepal has earned a place in the Guinness World Records by reading aloud continuously for 113 hours 15 minutes (that’s total of six days & nights), during “Longest Marathon Reading Aloud- Individual” event organized by The Readers’ Club in Tudikhel Ground, Kathmandu from Sep. 19-24, 2008.


In the presence of different personalities from various sector, Bajagain read aloud continuously from different books at tudikhel ground. There were two witness for every three hours and health workers monitored Bajagain’s condition. Eighty witnesses were present for purpose. The reading included a five minute break after each completed reading hour for eating and drinking.

“My happiness knows no bounds, It obviously was a difficult task” said Bajagain. “I think it was as difficult as climbing Mt. Everest but I’m proud to have represented my country in the Book of World Records”. He added. He told that he had read 17 books, written by Laxmi Pd. Devkota, Khagendra Sangraula, and Prof. Dr. D.P. Bhandari during the period. “I was not allowed to sleep, there would be a break of five minute to eat in every hour” he told. “One million and three hundred thousand children in Nepal are deprived from study. State should take their care. As a youth, this is my duty to remind the state. I thought that I have to stay in our own soil, need and show in Nepali people by establishing a world record, so I have done this” he added.

“Deepak is multi talented and we are really very proud of him”, said Amod Domzone Tamang, president of The Readers’ Club. Bajagain’s attempt flabbergasted doctors, who believed that reading aloud for such a long time was an impossible task and would lead to brain hemorrhage. “Despite threats from human rights personnel not to continue with the program as the boy could die, I continued with it because I felt something in Bajagain that he could do something great”, said Amod. This club had organized the event in Sept. last year in an effort to promote reading culture in Nepal.

Bajagain not only set a world record but also stunned health care workers from Nepal Medical Association, Nursing Association of Nepal and Bit Hospital, who monitored his condition during the recital, which was sponsored by Destination Overseas Consultant, Chaudhary Group, Everest Insurance, Avenues Television and Gorkha FM.

Previously Adrian Hilton of England had set world record by reading a Shakespearean masterpiece continuously for 11o hrs 46 min as it remained unbeaten for over three decade until Bajagain claimed the record last year.

Bajagain, a resident of Khumaltar, Lalitpur has just appeared in his third year examination. Deepak is active in sports and other social service as well.
